Be Still and KNOW that I Am God!

It seems like the “peace of God” is in short supply these days. It is so easy to get sucked into the things that are happening around us. It could be politics, family, job, church or even our own unhappiness with life. The problem with getting sucked in is that it defines our world and demands our constant attention. The end result is that we become fearful, angry, resentful or bitter at someone or something. Our loss is the peace that comes from dwelling in the presence of the Lord.

I am reminded of a popular verse that is the basis for the title. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”” (Psalm 46:10) It is a relevant verse for our times. I wonder how many of us understand what it means to “be still.” The literal meaning of the phrase “be still” is to stop doing things that only God can do. It means to stop worrying about the things that are under God’s control. If you were in a car with Jesus it is a reminder to give Him the keys, and to sit back and enjoy the ride through each and every day. You may wonder how you can get to the place of letting Jesus drive. We are reminded to reflect upon God’s character. He is the Creator of heaven and earth. We need to remember that He is in control of all things, including what He allows in our lives. Think about this for a moment, that He is in control of all things for all times.

These precious words of comfort and strength are actually the lyrics to a song. An unknown song writer for God’s people penned these words to a people that were threatened by literal enemies that surrounded them. He reminded them and us that, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)  God’s people throughout all generations have faced troubles. The circumstances may be different but the threat is the same. One of the greatest blessings of belonging to Jesus is that He is our safe place. He is the fortress that we can retreat to when overcome with the challenges in our world. The word “refuge” actually refers to the place that we turn to for assistance or security. But not only does He protect us, He is also our source of “strength”. Going to the Lord in prayer and to His words transforms our thoughts and our outlook on life. We become people of courage rather than captives to fear. And a third blessing is that He is with us. Now, I really need you to stop and ponder the significance of this reality. God, the Creator, is with you. There is nowhere that you go that He is not with you. No matter what you are facing He is there with you.

God does not say, “Be still, and know that [you are] god.” He says, “Be still, and know that I am God!” It is amazing what happens to us when we turn to him. It could be in our thoughts. It could be through a song. It could be crying out in prayer. It could be in reading His Word.  “Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah” (Psalm 46:2–3)
